MOUNT ELGON -THE EXTINCT VOLCANO
Mount Elgon is the second highest Mountain in Uganda, with it's highest peak wagagai at an elevation of 4321m above the sea level. It used to be the highest mountain in Africa but lost it's glorious position to Kilimanjaro due to erosion. It is now the 4th highest mountain in East Africa and the 8th in Africa
Mount Elgon has the largest volcanic base in East Africa with the largest Calder in the world. The mountain spans a distance of 80 km and rises over 300m above the surrounding plains
MOUNT ELGON TREk
Mount Elgon Trekk is a thrilling adventure hike that takes you through the mount Elgon national park to it's highest peak wagagai and the spectacular 40km Calder. During this trekk you will encounter amazing feature, such as hills, caves, small rivers, streams, rare bird species, and animals like antilopes, blue faced Colobus monkeys, . The national park is a habitat for over 300 bird species, making it perfect for bird watchers and photographers
There are several trails for the hike, all with amazing and photography features and a promise of adventure for nature lovers
The Sipi trail is a moderately challenging circuit trail that starts from sipi and ends in Bushiyi . It takes 4-5 days to hike on this trail . The Bushiyi is short and intense only taking 3-4 days. The piswa trail is the longest and easiest to hike on it. This takes 5-6 days, starting from and ending in Bushiyi, The Bushiyi to Sipi trail takes 4-5 days.
Incase of time limitations, go for the day hike tour of Mount Elgon National park starting from kapkwai exploration centre. The higher slopes of Mount Elgon which are on the border of Kenya and Uganda, from sipi falls to kapkwai main gate is approximately 12 km drive.
PEOPLE ON MOUNT ELGON
Mount Elgon is a home to two tribes, the Bagisu which speaks the Gishu language and the sabinys which speaks the kupsabiny language. Together with the marginalized "Ndorobs" forced to dwell deep within the forest of Benet.
The Bagisu, also known as the Bamasaba consider Mount Elgon to be the embodiment of their founding father Masaba and refer to the mountain by this name. Kapkwai cave is the ancestors home of the Sabiny people, Where the elders go and talk to their ancestors when circumcision ceremonies are almost taking place
Mount Elgon National park is a habitat for over 300 bird species, including the primate animals. The higher slopes are protected by national parks in Uganda and Kenya creating an extensive transboundary conservation
WHO CAN HIKE MOUNT ELGON
The mountain Elgon trek is suitable for every nature lover and adventure seeker between 10 to 80 years. Some of the trails are moderately challenging, so any adventure lover can enjoy hiking on them. All you need is determination and you will conquer the mountain.
